Why some photos are black & white.

A handful of your images will arrive in black and white. That’s an intentional, hand-crafted choice — here’s the thinking behind it.

Black and white isn't a fallback or a way to hide a difficult frame. We choose it when an image is simply stronger without color.

A choice, not a filter

Some moments are about emotion, light, and expression more than they are about color — a tear during the vows, hands held during a quiet prayer, deep shadow and bright window light. Stripping the color lets the feeling carry the frame.

Real work goes into each one

These aren't a one-tap effect. Each black-and-white image gets its own tonal treatment — contrast, dodging and burning, and retouching done specifically for monochrome. It's a separate craft from our color editing, and we only apply it where it elevates the photo.

Good to know

Would you like a color version of a specific black-and-white image? In most cases we can — it means reopening the original RAW file and re-editing it from scratch in color, which is its own piece of work. Just send us the photo and we'll talk through it. We're always happy to help.

You'll always have plenty of color

The vast majority of your gallery is delivered in full, rich color. The black-and-white selects are there to add variety and weight — a few frames that feel timeless among the color story of your day.

We reach for black and white when it makes a moment feel more true — never less finished.
